about

Kazakh-born, Prague-based producer Paromanormal (real name Roman Pavlenko) heads up the first solo release for the Czech label Amphibian. His ‘Millennial Hour’ EP continues in the label’s tastes — demonstrated through a run of high-tempo, long-lasting parties — with a terse 4-tracker blending techno’s punch and the energy elevation of trance.

Roman’s sound has been forged in an undeniably Czech environment: although learning the ropes of production while studying at university and owing a lot to a DX7 VST and the Kong Volca FM synth are, perhaps, more global markers of a burgeoning producer, it wasn’t until Roman encountered the legendary Cukr rave that his sights locked onto the sound he would later adopt and develop for himself, three years later.

Paromanormal’s offering to Amphibian is divided into four tracks, each demonstrating a confident understanding of what it takes to make people dance. Opener ‘Linger’ is pacey and agile yet relatively sparse, geared up for the morning rush, while ‘Millenial Hour’ sinks into its greater weight: at its peak nigh to psytrance’s incessant energy and drive, but perhaps drawing more from a wellspring of sounds pushed by the likes of Tresor’s sprawling catalogue and the Fast Forward movement. ‘Aeon’ pulls back toward the transcendency of ‘Linger’, with a sparing use of melody illuminating the openings in the subbass, while parting shot ‘Komatrue’ strikes as a wild card in the release: gone are the pulsating baselines and trance-tropes, replaced by tactile breakbeats and patient ambient synthwork.

Across the four tracks we’re given a glimpse of a producer only warming up: nimble dance floor burners for fueling lax ravers, with minimalist overtones despite the combined effect of its parts. High-energy, activated dance floor music, for the morning crew.
